Ring finger itch

This seemed to be a natural topic to tackle, as I have now heard of two people who have developed this issue in the last couple of months. Both have been married for over 8 years. The story goes the first person began to notice irritation, dryness and itching to her ring finger. The same finger that she has had her wedding ring on for the last 9 years! What changed? Was she now allergic to that beautiful piece of jewelry? Well, as it turns out, this phenomenon is not as rare as we thought. The second individual also developed the EXACT same symptoms. Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

You may (or may not) have heard of them before, but after a patient of mine in the ER recently was diagnosed with one of these, I thought it would be worth sharing.

A Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) or “Blood Clot” can be the result of many things. This particular post is geared towards common causes and ways to prevent a DVT. While treatable, a DVT can lead to very serious complications including a Pulmonary Embolism (PE) blood clot in the lungs.

The story goes, this 50 year old male recently went on vacation to the Bahamas. A week long cruise that began with a cross country flight, followed by 7 days of bliss, culminating in another cross country flight back to California.

Poison Oak, Poison Ivy, Poison Sumac…oh My!

It’s that time of year again. The sun is hot, the water is cold and the rashes are…well, spreading. That’s right. As much as we love our camping and outdoor activities here in Placer County, there’s an often unnoticed evil hiding among the vegetation. Often it is noticed too late, or not at all. Not until that unrelenting rash shows up that makes you want to scratch like a dog full of fleas. You guessed it, I’m talking about the dreaded poison oak, poison ivy or poison sumac.
